United States Government
The United States of America is a constitutional republic and a representative democracy. It is the world’s longest surviving federation. The country’s main document is its constitution. The US citizens are subject to three different levels of authority- federal, state, and local.
There is a clear distinction between the three branches of government- legislative, executive and judicial. The legislative authority in the country is the Congress. It is divided in the Senate and the House of Representatives.
The Senate declares wars, signs treaties, appoints the Cabinet, federal judges, military officers, and other federal level officers. Every state in the federation is represented by two senators without regard to its size and population. Each senator is in term for six years.
The House of Representatives is the lower house of Congress. It creates and passes federal laws which also have to be approved by the Senate and signed by the president. Representation in the house is proportionate to population of the states. The limit for the number of representatives is allowed by law is 453. The term is two years. The House also deals with revenue bills and impeachments.
The executive power is in the hands of the president and his chosen Cabinet. The president is the commander in chief of the armed forces. He is elected every four years through the Electoral College together with his vice president. The current 44th president is Barack Obama. The president is responsible for the legislative program of his party and for the foreign and domestic policy of the state.
The judicial branch of government is represented by the Supreme Court and the lower federal courts. Judges are appointed by the president with the approval of the Senate. They interpret laws and revoke ones they consider unconstitutional.

The Mother Road: Route 66
Running between Los Angeles and Chicago, traversing 8 states and over two thousand miles, the legendary road diagonally passes through the heart of the United States.
Before it was paved in 1926 this road was the National Old Trails Highway, later earning the title of Main Street of America lined by hundreds of cafés, motels, gas stations, and tourist attractions as it wound through the small towns across the Midwest and Southwest. After World War II the road was used by people leaving the industrial East for good jobs in Southern California embodying the shift from the Rust Belt to the Sun Belt.
From the late 1950s over the next 25 years as the high-speed Interstate highways were completed old Route 66 was bypassed section by section till in 1984 Route 66 was officially decommissioned when the last stretch of freeway was finished.
The old route is now called Historic Route 66.
Though it is no longer a main route across the country, Route 66 has retained its mystique with its baffling array of roadside attractions; tempting passing travelers helping the towns along the old route stay alive.
Route 66 passes through a marvelous cross-section of American scenes, from the golden sands and sunshine of Los Angeles, past the Grand Canyon and the Native American communities of the desert southwest, to the gritty streets of St. Louis and Chicago.
Route 66 is true experience of a road trip USA, nostalgic and unforgettable.
